Plans for Mason City - 1875
Thanks to Jim Tait, who found this historical map on the internet. Larry Bednar adds the following information: "The map is a proposal of a future MC (a blueprint of MC submitted by a group of city planners), not an actual map. Some things on the map were already in place, but some were just proposals. And as we know, some of those proposals never came about and others were built and created in spots other than the ones proposed."
Note that north-south streets became avenues and "Commercial Street" became Federal Avenue. As far as we know, plans for a Mason City college and College Square never materialized, but of course we now have the excellent North Iowa Area Community College. See current map of Mason City.
