Rich Hoveland
WATERLOO —
Richard Hoveland, 65, of Waterloo died Tuesday (Dec. 29, 2009)
at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., of complications from surgery for
pancreatic cancer.
He was born May 23, 1944, in Mason City, son of Arnold and Mildred Thiemann
Hoveland.
He married Joan Van Besien on July 28, 1973, at St. Edward Catholic Church
in Waterloo.
He graduated from Iowa State University and then became employed with John
Deere, as an engineer, for 36 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 2001. He was a
past president of the John Deere Supervisor’s Club.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, David (Cortney Barron) of Waterloo and
Michael of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, Bill (Jan), of Sarona, Wis.; a
sister, Susan (Bob) Hastings, of Tucson, Ariz.; four brothers-in-law, Jack
Finley of Chicago, Ill., Richard (Sandy) Van Besien of Waterloo, Bill
Schachterle of Ackley and Ed Malek of Ellsworth; four sisters-in-law, Mary
Kaye (Bill) Mintline of Colfax, Calif., Carol (Jim) Powell of Prairie du
Chien, Wis., Jane (Gene) Zeck of Washington and Jean (Ray) Lynch of West Des
Moines; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gloria Finley; and two
sisters-in-law, Dorothy Schachterle and Virginia Malek.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, at St. Edward Catholic Church,
with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the
Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will
be a 7 p.m. vigil service.
There will be no visitation on Saturday at the church.
